Geneva has approximately 190,000 inhabitants, though if you include the population of the politically independent suburban communities, this figure comes to more like 480,000. Surprisingly small, you might think, and, sure enough, Geneva's docks, lakeside promenades, narrow old-quarter streets and elegant shops provide an excellent backdrop for leisurely exploration without the hustle and bustle of most large cities.
Geneva has a cosmopolitan atmosphere due to its central role in the international community and the many ethnic minority communities that enrich the town.
Also known as the “city of peace”, Geneva is home to the headquarters of the United Nations (UN), and the International Red Cross (ICRC) and numerous other international organisations were founded there.
The European Football Championship will be held in the Stade de Genève and the La Praille district.
